Holding power. A term used to describe the power of an anchor’s ability to withstand the whistling wind and waves. But how does such a small device arrest such a large force?

Not found in its size or weight, the stabilizing ability of this hook to anchor a boat in the tossing turmoil of the stormy sea hinges on its ability to engage and penetrate the seabed. A mere 5-pound anchor can withhold a 1000 pound boat.

One look at the world around instantly reminds us of the raging storm — a whistling sea, calling us away from the security of our ship-steering Sailor.

Much like a boat at sea, if our anchor is not engaging the seabed of a heavenly perspective, we stand the chance of being tossed, lost, and thrown overboard.

Our ability to withstand a turbulent world doesn’t rest in our “size or weight” but in the holding power of our Anchor. As we head into a busy season with surmounting demands, we must sink our anchor in His Word, His will, His wisdom, His worship, and His work.

Key Verse: Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. Colossians 3:1-2

Rest, renewal, restoration, redemption, and release are found in His Word. As we fix His words in our hearts and minds, they become the guiding light for our lives, giving us vision and direction for our plans, relationships, and desires. Meditating on and memorizing Scripture is how we learn to magnify Him and His ways. Do you do this regularly? If not, try to carve out five minutes each day this week to focus on memorizing one verse and meditate on its meaning.  

    • Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Deuteronomy 11:18

Unless our anchors are secured by His will, we will drift in an open sea of desires. This means laying aside our preferences and plans for His purposes. We must make it our delightful pleasure to seek His will above ours. Have an open, transparent conversation with God, laying down your struggles in this area. Seek strength to surrender.

    • I delight to do your will, O my God. Psalm 40:8

Not all wisdom is created equal. Godly wisdom comes from His throne, leading to life, freedom, and fulfillment. Worldly wisdom is anchored in the flesh, leading to fleshly decisions and more bondage. When you need wisdom and direction, where do you go? God? Google? Girlfriend? Spend some time processing with God as to the level of wisdom you receive from Him vs. other avenues. His promise of wisdom is freely given (James 1:5).

    • For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength. 1 Corinthians 1:25

  • Thursday – Anchored in God’s Work.

We were created to do great works, which He established before creation. When we lack fruitfulness for His kingdom, we lack fulfillment because unless the Lord builds the house, those who labor do so in vain. Let’s make our limited time on earth matter for eternity. Ask God to help you find a place to serve Him, to be abounding and unmovable in His work.

    • Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain. 1 Corinthians 15:58

  • Friday – Anchored in God’s Worship.

As created beings, we were made to worship him. If we do not remain anchored in his worship, we will find something else to worship. Children, jobs, technology, and materialism can quickly become the anchor for which we cast our commitment. Ask God to show you anyone or anything that receives more devotion, dedication, and desire than Him. There is only room for one throne in any human heart. As His children, we have to assess, “Is The King on that throne?”

    • Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.” Matthew 4:10
