Standing in awe at the foot of this majestic waterfall, we watched the constant flow of water rush over the top plummeting onto the rocks below. My hubby stood motioning in an attempt to say something and, although he stood within arms reach, I couldn’t make out what he was saying. With each climbing step, the pounding force of water against the rocks grew, and his voice dwindled. Drawing closer to the waterfall meant he either had to scream, or I had to really lean in and focus on what he was saying; hear his voice.
In the digital era in which we live, there is a multitude of voices rushing in, crashing into the rocks of our lives. This constant flow of voices saturates our minds proclaiming who we are, declaring who we should be, broadcasting where we should be headed, and conveying what we should be doing. If allowed, they will drown out the voice of God. The closer you get to the cascade of voices, the more you have to really lean in to hear God’s voice.
This week, we are focusing on hearing the soft, sovereign voice of the Whisperer by concentrating on the story found in 1 Samuel 3. Should you have time to read it in its entirety, you will be blessed. Be sure you grab your free copy of Be Still Bible Study on hearing God’s voice.
Key Verse: Then, Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening.” 1 Samuel 3:10
- Monday – Samuel had to learn to hear the voice of God. God called him three times before Eli told Samuel how to respond. In learning how to hear from the Lord, we may need to process through the voices with other believers. Ask God to lead you to another firm believer with whom you can process.
- Then Eli realized that the Lord was calling the boy. So Eli told Samuel, “Go and lie down, and if He calls you, say, ‘Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.'” 1 Samuel 3:8-9
- Tuesday – Like God persistently pursued Samuel, He is faithful to patiently pursue us, talking to us in a manner we understand. He doesn’t give up on us the first time we don’t hear Him. In fact, the Lord called Samuel three times and then went and STOOD there. Sometimes we miss God calling our names because we do not recognize it. Spend time asking Him to reveal His voice.
- The Lord came and stood there, calling as at the other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” 1 Samuel 3:10
- Wednesday – He doesn’t call the equipped, He equips the called. The Lord skipped right over Eli (high priest and judge) and went to the much younger and inexperienced Samuel. He called based on faith, not age or position. Our available “position” positions us to hear. Have you limited God’s voice because of your perceived age, status, or lack of knowledge?
- Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord; The word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him. 1 Samuel 3:7
- Thursday – As with Samuel, we must be faithful and respond when God speaks to us. Samuel was faithful to God and “did not let any of His words fall to the ground.” May we be found faithful in the small things so we can be trusted with great things. Father, have you revealed anything to me that I have allowed to “fall to the ground”?
- The Lord was with Samuel as he grew up, and he let none of His words fall to the ground. 1 Samuel 3:19
- Friday – There may be times He reveals uncomfortable information to us as with the case of Samuel and the upcoming punishment and death of Eli’s sons. Lack of follow-through is a stumbling block for future revelation. Is God revealing anything to you that is uncomfortable? Ask His guidance to help you process it in a manner worthy of your calling.
- So Samuel told him everything, hiding nothing from him. Then Eli said, “He is the Lord; let him do what is good in His eyes.” 1 Samuel 3:18
Like a parent calling their child, He continues to call and chase us. Grab your free printable, and let us learn to hear His voice!
